The biggest settings mistake people make is treating every JPEG as the same kind of source. A flat logo, a signature on white paper, a product icon, and a detailed photograph all need different tracing behavior. When the goal is a clean brand asset or cut file, fewer colors and simpler paths usually help. When the goal is a stylized photo effect, you may need more colors and more detail, but you should expect a larger SVG.

Photos are the exception. A photographic JPEG contains gradients, texture, lighting changes, and subtle color transitions that do not naturally map to compact SVG code. If the SVG is much larger than the original JPEG, it usually means the source image contains too many edges for an efficient vector file. Shadows, gradients, wrinkles, textures, and camera noise can all produce extra shapes. The fastest fix is usually to simplify the raster source or move to Ultra Light output instead of trying to keep every detail.

If the edges look rough, use a cleaner source image whenever possible. Compression artifacts from a low-quality JPEG can create uneven outlines around text and logos. In that situation, increasing smoothness helps, but the best long-term fix is still starting from a better image.
